Thoughts on Later: Lloyd Cole & Anna Calvi. #FT #music
I watched this week's Later (I often don't) this week mainly because Lloyd Cole was on - nice performances with his occasional electric backing band. His current tour is acoustic/one-man due to costs/budgets (http://www.lloydcole.com/weblog/index.php?p=6699&c=1).
He's playing in Stockton on Thursday evening and I intend to get along.
The recent album (Standards: http://www.lloydcole.com/music/standards/main.html) is great with some fun, more rocky tracks than the last few and some poignant slower songs (Myrtle and Rose is a standout - he performed that on Later).

I also enjoyed Anna Calvi, who I'd never heard of let alone heard any music from. Some quick research shows her to be worth an explore. Interesting style/imagery on stage and we always dig a chick who plays guitar.
How come I am so unaware of a cool (newish) rock act? Am I that out of touch.

As for the others:
John Newman - seems like someone has backed him with some serious money to have a string section on Later. Odd and unappealing voice and bland soul/pop as far as I could tell. Somebody must like it?
Presumably many more than appreciate Lloyd Cole if he has to tour solo while this guy gets bells+whistles(+ strings)

MGMT: I tried. But seriously?
Felt a bit embarrassed on their behalf.  If I wanted to be unkind I might say "Radiohead wannabes".
Am I missing something?

The other two acts (Passenger & Concha Buika) I should probably give more time to - I actually skipped after a minute or so as they didn't grab my attention at the time.

So - ned to make sure I don't miss Lloydy on Thursday (http://www.arconline.co.uk/whats-on/music/lloyd-cole) and remember to check out Anna on Google Play Music.
