To Discuss...:

To Discuss...: Inviting Mark Sta Ana & Charlie Adams (& mentioning alison adams & loulou santa ana for info... this is a private post seen only by those copied in). So... Charlie is talking about a console on his xmas wishlist. Initially he would be happy with an XBox 360 - mainly to run FIFA14. However with the new consoles coming out we need to consider them too. Of the new ones I tend to agree with the thinking and conclusions in this Engadget piece (they favour PS4 as cheaper & more powerful and dedicated to gaming).  It also aligns with my general dislike of Microsoft and we can and will be able to do plenty of "connected media" things via alternative methods/devices so the "Xbox as media-hub" thing is actually unattractive to me (who wants MSFT as their gateway to  media consumption?). There is a also the consideration of which network (Sony vs XBox) Cherlie's mates are on (now, and into the future). Possibly staying on a previous gen. Xbox...

A young person makes a mistake and commits a nonviolent offense--and we lock them in prison until they die there??? It sounds incredible, but that happens repeatedly, as my column notes. The stories are unbelievable. Help spread the word about the need for reform.

YouTube and Google+ Comments - a different view; from the G+ side

YouTube and Google+ Comments - a different view; from the G+ side My friend Eli Fennell has made a masterpiece with 'the view from the other side' of this issue with this classic use of the famous Hitler video clip. Watch the whole thing if you can but when it hits 1:27 in my view is when it really gets me laughing. Most of the conversations I've heard about why the change of the commenting system is causing angst comes from YouTubers... this time it is from the viewpoint of Plussers that were glad to not have to see the junk brought into their world by many spammy, nasty YouTubers. Get ready to LOL at this one, and be ready to pause at times to read the text as it moves pretty fast at times. Good Job Eli... you make me laugh! === #fun   #YouTubeHitler   #youtubecomments   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9thBy2H-Avw

Reflection 10 years on: The Party’s Over: Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies #FT #peakoil http://www.postcarbon.org/blog-post/1939341-ten-years-after# 10 years on from initial publication Richard Heinberg looks back. Really influential book for me (ecology, 'money', energy/work, growth) and this essay is wise and timely. Peakoil as a term has been deliberately undermined/misinterpreted over the past decade however our current economic problems were predicted & explained by 'peakists' joining the dots between energy costs & economic activity. This quote on growth is telling: "Resistance to the idea of peak oil has also come from mainstream economists. That’s because (as The Party’s Over explained on pages 169-172) peak oil effectively means the end of economic growth as we knew it during the 20th century. Growth is sacred to most economists: even credentialed insiders (economists like Jeff Rubin or investment fund managers like Jeremy Grantham) w...

The packet capture shown in these new NSA slides shows internal database replication traffic for the anti-hacking system I worked on for over two years. Specifically, it shows a database recording a user login as part of this system: http://googleblog.blogspot.ch/2013/02/an-update-on-our-war-against-account.html Recently Brandon Downey, a colleague of mine on the Google security team, said (after the usual disclaimers about being personal opinions and not speaking for the firm which I repeat here) - "fuck these guys": https://plus.google.com/108799184931623330498/posts/SfYy8xbDWGG I now join him in issuing a giant Fuck You to the people who made these slides. I am not American, I am a Brit, but it's no different - GCHQ turns out to be even worse than the NSA. We designed this system to keep criminals out . There's no ambiguity here. The warrant system with skeptical judges, paths for appeal, and rules of evidence was built from centuries of hard won experience. When i...

This has now hit the Play Streaming service. Giving it a play.  Should I feel guilty for not buying the physical thing?  I feel it's a bit of a rip-off actually - repackaging the same album again. I'm happy to stream these extras (effectively out-takes/B-sides) . If they become essential listening then I may pick up the CD/pack. *Read this! #googlewinseverything (part 1)' #FT Great read (nice spot David E. Anderson). Whilst we should be wary of any centralisation of power/wealth, Google's record (outcomes, relative openness/transparency) to date makes them more trustworthy than any of their peers (tech, comms, media) & certainly more than our (lying, secretive, under-performing) governments.
