1) The original usage by intelligent persons was to describe articles, stories, or reports that had been faked. That is, content making statements that are false, distorted, or often entirely fabricated without any foundational basis whatsoever. Given leverage by social media platforms like Facebook and search engines like Google, and affiliated ad networks, these "fake news" stories have been promulgated for political motives, purely economic motives, and combinations of both.
2) The usage of the term fake news by Donald Dump's moronic, white trash followers and Nazi-loving political sycophants is entirely different. They use the term to label stories, articles, or reports that they do not necessarily assert are false, but that they feel do not rise to the level of actual news worthy of being reported widely. This of course includes anything that these vile, perverted sociopaths would prefer to suppress from widespread visibility.
