Musings on music listening...

Commented on a friend's FB post, thought I'd post it myself

My vinyl is in the loft.
My CDs mostly in plastic tubs (some exceptions like special editions/box sets etc.)
My (proper) hifi decomissioned recently. I had it in the living room under 'licence to use' for 'proper listening' (eg an album right through).
In 2017 I must have done that about 10 times max.
Which is a bit sad, but the reality of it.

Most of my CDs I ripped to digital (I went Ogg rather than mp3) and that catalogue I pushed up/into
Google Play Music (you can add 50K tracks of your own) which we then subscribe to (family plan: £15/mnth).
The service is great & the quality/fidelity decent & I tend to listen via laptop->mini-hifi; phone->earbuds or decent-ish headphones; "casting to telly"
So not as good as a CD on decent "proper" HiFi
But considerably better than a cassette in a yellow Sony Sports Walkman on (in hindsight) shit headphones!

But... as the technology has changed my listening/accessing music has too.

As Bowie said 16 Years ago... it flows like water from taps.

I've embraced the new ways... the experience (as a consumer) of any time/place/where/device is music fan Nirvana!

There are still treasured artefacts amongst the stuff stashed away... but it's (mostly) the MUSIC I always loved. I certainly don't miss the plastic & cardboard of the CD years*

*some exceptions apply.

The Bowie quote:
“Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity."
