Edward Snowden: The Untold Story (Threat Level | WIRED) #FT

Edward Snowden: The Untold Story (Threat Level | WIRED) #FT I just caught up with this great article - highly recommended. Quite how people in authority have the gall to label Snowden as a 'traitor' whilst the Director of national intelligence (James Clapper) lied under oath to a US senate committee & remains in post, unpunished is astonishing. Except of course it isn't. It's entirely normal for us to fail to hold those in authority to account here in the UK & their in the US. Sadly. http://www.wired.com/2014/08/edward-snowden/

READ THIS! IPCC Draft report on Climate Change: Our most important political problem yet hardly mentioned in our political debates & certainly not one of the issues people will choose as their decisive issues at our next election. #FT http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/science/earth/greenhouse-gas-emissions-are-growing-and-growing-more-dangerous-draft-of-un-report-says.html?referrer= I think it's been clear for some time that we as a species have already decided to value short-term 'benefits' over long-term 'health'. Truly nsane. Continued warming, the report found, is likely to “slow down economic growth, make poverty reduction more difficult, further erode food security, and prolong existing poverty traps and create new ones, the latter particularly in urban areas and emerging hot spots of hunger.” http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/science/earth/greenhouse-gas-emissions-are-growing-and-growing-more-dangerous-draft-of-un-report-says.html?referrer

How to understand Twitter's bad new direction.

Image
How to understand Twitter's bad new direction. Twitter this week made two changes: http://goo.gl/XFcSvm These seemingly small changes indicate a big shift in direction for Twitter. The first was a two-part change: Twitter started suspending the accounts of users who posted a video showing the execution of an American journalist, and it adopted a new policy and process for handling requests from people who ask to have images of deceased family members removed from Twitter. The second is that Twitter now adds tweets to users' timelines from people they don't follow. The posts are selected by Twitter for their popularity. These aren't just isolated changes, but an entirely new direction for Twitter. And that direction is toward Facebook, even as Facebook pulls away in the same direction.  It makes me wonder whether instead of social media being a place for exploring and understanding other people and the world, it instead becomes a dumbed-down information equivalent of ...

Nice analysis of & reflection on the enigma that is Super Mario. #FT http://gu.com/p/4xxtq No surprise that Liverpool found Mario Balotelli was going for a song Great quote: Mario Sconcerti, writing in Corriere della Sera, neatly summed up the Balotelli phenomenon as “the strange talent of making everyone happy when he arrives and even happier when he leaves”. http://gu.com/p/4xxtq

James Alexander Gordon, voice of BBC radio's football results, dies at 78 #FT http://gu.com/p/4vp42 He once told the Edinburgh Evening News: "Dad used to get really irritated by football announcers when he was filling in his pools coupon, because the intonation in their voices misled him. "So I decided to gather all the results on a Saturday before he checked his coupon, and I would go into a cupboard with a torch and some kid-on radio equipment, and read them out in a way I thought was more realistic. "When I did my first broadcast, Dad cried and said 'the wee bugger's finally done it'." http://gu.com/p/4vp42

There is no single solution to the plague of trolls, abusers, harassers, lunatics, imposters, and assholes online any more than there is on earth: no one algorithm, no one company rule, no one regulation will do it all, though they can help. The most powerful weapon in any case is our own norms as a society.

There is no single solution to the plague of trolls, abusers, harassers, lunatics, imposters, and assholes online any more than there is on earth: no one algorithm, no one company rule, no one regulation will do it all, though they can help. The most powerful weapon in any case is our own norms as a society. What exactly are our norms online? And what are we — you, yes you, and I — doing to establish and enforce our standards as an online society? Anything? Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms bear responsibility. But so do we all. I cannot imagine any civilized being who is not appalled at the treatment of Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda at the hands of disgusting trolls after the death of her father. This forced her to leave Twitter and that, in turn, forced Twitter to decide that it should “improve our policies.” The Washington Post, in its report, pointed to other egregious cases of abuse. It’s worth pointing out that this week also brought us Jezebel bringing its own corporate pa...

Premier League 2014-15 Preview: West Ham United #COYI #FT

Premier League 2014-15 Preview: West Ham United #COYI   #FT   Lots of truth in this great season preview from Jacob Steinberg (@JacobSteinberg). "West Ham lost 20 times last season, played a higher percentage of long passes than any other side (17%), registered the lowest shooting accuracy figure in the Premier League last (37.4%), were involved in the most 0-0 draws (six), dropped the most points from winning positions (20) and only won four points from losing positions. When they conceded the first goal, they lost 15 times and they failed to score in 15 league matches. They scored three equalisers all season. Only two players, Kevin Nolan and Carlton Cole, managed more than five league goals and even they did not get close to double figures. " "... the mediocrity of the bottom half meaning that a team that lost 20 games while playing not to lose was able to finish 13th with 40 points." "This is not a popular opinion but Allardyce is a proven manager at this...

I wrote this post on Tom Hanks' virtual typewriter.

Image
I wrote this post on Tom Hanks' virtual typewriter. Actor Tom Hanks shipped an iOS app yesterday called Hanx Writer. It's a writing app for iPad that simulates and old typewriter, with the visuals and typefaces and animations and, most of all, sounds -- for example, when you get to the end of a line, the app goes "ding!" and slides back to the other side of the page, one line down. The app is surprisingly appealing to use. Think of it as the cheap version of this bad boy:  http://youtu.be/WprQVTEn6kg The app is free. You can add background colors for $2.99 or pay $4.99 for what they're calling the Writer's Block Bundle, which gives you multiple document support, text alignment, title page and picture support, ribbon colors and background colors.  I can't wait to annoy my co-workers with this.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hanx-writer/id868326899?mt=8

Catching Up with the Faces

Image
Catching Up with the Faces I watched the BBC4 Imagine doc: "Rod Stewart: Can't Stop Me Now" on Friday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b036yl2v It was a nicely made retrospective by Alan Yentob gaining good access to His Rodness and lots of nice archive footage. Whilst it was obviously sympathetic to The Rodster it never felt cloying.  He came across as reasonably human and likeable despite being Rod Stewart and the women and all that. Kinda makes one nostalgic for proper "rock'n'roll behaviour" from genuinely roguish boys-on-tour  e.g. moving all the hotel room furniture/fittings in the corridor and sitting around... perhaps Rod was a secret Situationist (despite his 80s T-Shirt) Clearly the "good stuff" was with The Faces in the earlier days of his career. Despite urging from my mate Raymond Gorman I've neglected The Faces so I've been listening to some over the weekend. They really had a great sound (didn't they) - that mix of cl...

For alison adams

For alison adams  Re Song X (playing earlier) This from (John Kelman ) is a nice review. "Contrary to popular misconception, free music does not mean random noise, and one of the most striking features about Song X: Twentieth Anniversary is just how un-random everything is. A close listen to "Endangered Species" reveals very intentional motifs; even at their most extreme and sonically dense, the collective improvisations are incredibly focused—unfettered, yes, but manifesting an unmistakable sense of purpose."
